In recognition of the bicentennial of President Abraham Lincoln’s birth and the 100th anniversary of the first issuance of the Lincoln Cent, the United States Mint is minting and issuing four new one-cent coins dated 2009. Here is the perfect opportunity to obtain all 4 coins honoring Abraham Lincoln, our 16th President. During his time in office he successfully led the Nation out of the Civil War, preserving the Union and ending slavery. In recognition of his role as President, an image of Lincoln, designed by Victor D. Brenner, has been featured on the one-cent coin since 1909, the 100th anniversary of Lincoln’s birth. Each coin's reverse depicts historic moments in Abraham Lincoln's life.
The first coin issued features the Birthplace of President Lincoln, a log cabin in LaRue County, Kentucky where he was born on February 12, 1809.
Second is the "Formative Years" reverse featuring the early formative years of President Lincoln's life, reading a book as he takes a break from his work as a rail splitter in Indiana during his younger years.
Third of the four new reverse designs features Abraham Lincoln as a young professional standing in front of the old state capitol building in Springfield, Illinois.
And finally, the fourth coin in the series featuring a reverse design depicting the half-finished United States Capitol dome, symbolizing a Nation torn apart by civil war and the resolve Lincoln showed as he guided the country through its most grave crisis.
