THE SECOND COIN IN A HISTORICAL SERIES
For the new millenium, the US Mint created and struck a new One Dollar Coin. These coins were struck using with a never before used metal combination of a pure copper core with an outer layer of maganese brass, giving this coin it's distinctive golden hue. Rarely encountered in circulation, these beautiful coins recognize the spirit of Liberty, Peace and Freedom as demonstrated by Sacagawea's conduct and assitance as an interpreter and guide to Lewis & Clark in their famous Westward Journey of the 1800's. Building on the popularity of the Sacagawea obverse, the US Mint chose this coin to highlight it's new Native American series of golden One Dollar coins. With only one unique reverse to be issued each year, this series is destined to become a cherished history of the United States.
For the second theme of the Native American $1 Coin Series, "Government - The Great Tree of Peace," is symbolized by the Hiawatha Belt with five arrows bound together, with the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, $1, Haudenosaunee and Great Law of Peace. The Hiawatha Belt is a visual record of the creation of the Haudenosaunee, also known as the Iroquois Confederacy, with five symbols representing the five original Nations. The central figure on the belt, the Great White Pine, represents the Onondaga Nation with the four square symbols representing the Mohawk, Oneida, Cayuga and Seneca Nations. The bundle of arrows symbolizes strength in unity for the Iroquois Confederacy. The design is by Artistic Infusion Program Master Designer Thomas Cleveland.
